| The Stahlbaums have gorgeously decorated their home, and ate gleefully awaiting the arrival of their guests to the annual Christmas party. Little Clara and her brother Fritz are especially excited to see their Uncle Drosselmeyer. A maker of mechanical toys, he always bestows the most wonderful gifts on the children, and this Christmas Eve, it is no different; everyone gathers around to delight in a marvelous plaything, consisting of four life-sized dancing dolls. But Clara is most captivated by the Nutcracker which Uncle Drosselmeyer has brought her as a present. As the festivities come to an end, the adults are putting the tired but overjoyed children to bed.
In Clara's room, her familiar world is suddenly beginning to transform: before her very eyes, the little girl's Nutcracker is coming to life. Leading a company of toy soldiers, he is fighting a battle against the Mouse King and his army. It is largely owing to Clara that the soldiers can triumph over the mice. The Nutcracker, filled with appreciation, invites Clara to accompany him to the Land of Candy. As they step onto Clara's bed, it magically changes into a splendid sleigh, and the two of them embark on their adventure. At first, their journey takes them into the midst of a whirling ice storm, but the Snow Queen bids her Snow Flakes to escort Clara and the Nutcracker safely out of the Land of Snow.
Upon reaching the Land of Candy, the Nutcracker turns into a handsome young prince. Along with the Sugar Plum Fairy, he arranges for a spectacular, colorful receptions in Clara's honor, who blissfully looks on, as the most diverse and enchanting dances she has ever seen are presented. But everything must come to an end sometime, and as the wondrous feast is winding down, the Nutcracker-Prince returns little Clara to her home, where she climbs back into bed, enlivened by an utterly fantastic adventure. |
