| Arguably the most influential band in the history of Asian music, X (Japan) spawned not only a genre, but an entire sub culture of fashion icons. Known for their "Visual Kei" style, X (Japan) brought a style to Japan that has been copied to the point of becoming cliché.
Formed in 1985 and active until 1997, X (Japan) continues to have numerous remix albums, singles collections and symphonic versions of their catalog released every year. Every year thousands of fans dress up as members of X (Japan) for an annual video concert.
Although there are many milestone events in the history of X (Japan), there are two events which have become legendary. The first is the band cutting their hair. This seemingly small even affected thousands of fans. X (Japan)'s hair was a symbol of the band's rebellious nature within a concretive culture. Hundreds of fans cut their hair in an act of soldiery and thousands of fans cried for days on end.
The second event, which will forever by the most tragic in the history of X (Japan) is the death of the guitar player, Hide. Considered the most ostentatious member of X (Japan), his death shocked the entire country. Following his death, the band had to publicly ask that the fans not follow in his footsteps. While there is still much controversy about the manner of Hide's death, it is certain that his passing affected fans like only a handful of artists throughout history have. He has become a legend. Thousands of fans visit his museum every year, and on May 2nd, the anniversary of his death, there is always a vigil.
